Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance, loss of consciousness, and convulsions associated with abnormal electrical conductivity in brain.
A natural food supplement which has nutritive and curative effects is always a better preventive and therapeutic approach compared to conventional drug therapy.
Several medications are available for the treatment of seizures and are effective only in 7 out of 10 patients with epilepsy.Yasuhiro Ishihara, researcher at Laboratory of Molecular Brain Science at Hiroshima University in Japan, conducted studies to determine the link between dietary docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (ω-3 fatty acid present in fatty fish and fish oil supplements) and oestrogen towards seizure suppression. Interestingly, studies have presented sufficient evidence suggesting that there is a strong relationship between supplementation of DHA and increased brain oestrogen levels work together to suppress seizures.
Researchers found that occurrence of seizures was delayed and last for very shorter duration in mice fed with cottonseed oil diet along with DHA compared to mice fed with cottonseed /and soybean oil diet alone. Interestingly increase in brain oestrogen levels are directly proportional to the DHA levels produced by the respective diets. Similar results and seizure responses were observed when the experiment was repeated but by adding oestrogen suppressing drug (Letrozole), which reveals that oestrogen levels has a potential roles in development of seizures.
Study results showed that DHA supplementation could increase the production of oestrogen in brain, which in turn prevents the seizure development.
